What is expressive painting?
Expressive painting focuses on fostering self-discovery and free expression through painting. In the expressive painting studio, we create an environment free from the pressures to perform. We believe in the innate creativity of every human, and we nurture children's ability to trust in themselves. Often, when children are very young, adults tell them that they are either creative or not. Both can hinder a child's creative development. In our space, we do not emphasize qualities of good or bad, success or failure. We work to cultivate an environment that minimizes comparison and criticism. As a result, children and youth learn to trust in their intuition. They start to freely express the richness of their worlds and respond to the critical voices inside with kindness and compassion. Creativity becomes play, adventure, and self-expression. This approach to expressive painting is inspired by the work of Michele Cassou.
